Karen Matell has been providing advice to a diverse group of healthcare clients for over 25 years. She counsels healthcare entities with respect to all legal matters, from day-to-day business challenges to navigating legal and regulatory processes, ensuring that clients are able to achieve their business and legal goals. She assists with daily operational challenges, litigation and government audits, human resources and personnel issues, corporate governance and regulatory compliance requirements, dispute resolution, mergers and acquisitions, and any other legal matters that may arise.
She has extensive experience representing home health care agencies and fiscal intermediaries and possesses a deep knowledge of wage parity, wage and hour compliance, workplace policies and procedures and handbooks, CON applications, plans of corrections, anti-kickback, and fraud and abuse. She represents clients in proceedings before the New York State Division of Human Rights, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and audits before the New York Attorney General, Office of Medicaid Inspector General, New York Department of Health, and New York Department of Labor. She provides a strategic review of risk assessment, monitoring, corrective actions and remediation processes in order to identify exposure of potential risks and gaps for corrective and preventative measures.
Karen is a frequent speaker at statewide conferences on healthcare, compliance and employment law issues. She has authored a multinational biotechnology Code of Business Conduct and Corporate Compliance handbook used for the education and guidance of Corporate Compliance Officers. She has been the lead of numerous projects to analyze and redesign Corporate Compliance processes to ensure a robust and effective compliance program.
Additionally, Karen has become a trusted source for sexual harassment, discrimination and gender compliance within organizations. She has designed, developed, implemented and presented training curricula and guidance for organizations for Gender Identity and Expression in the Workplace.
